Armenia Community of Isfahan was founded in 1606 by Shah Abbas, Safavid. During his war wit Ottoman Emperor, he brought Armenian from various parts of Armenia and Old Julfa City and settled them in Isfahan, Faridan and Charmahal.

Armenian quarter of Isfahan is called "New Julfa". It is located on the Southern side of the city of Isfahan. It is separated from the main parts of the city by the river called "Zayandeh-Roud".

When Shah Abbas I brought Armenian to Isfahan, settled them in the city proper and across the river. Many of those, who settled across the river, were from the Old City of Julfa and they named their community "New Julfa".

Shah Abbas had Armenian settlers treated cordially by his Persian subjects and officers and had presented them extensive tracts of land, upon which they could build their houses, churches and religious and cultural institutions. He gave them wide freedom and facilities to encourage them in developing their crafts and industries with view to improve and add to the crafts and industries of his capital city, Isfahan.

Armenian, whom he had settled in the city, proper remained there until 1650, when they were resettled in New Julfa, across the river, by Shah Abbas II. There, they constructed houses and formed parishes named for their old Parishes in Armenia. In 2002, New Julfa has about 8000 Armenian.
