The picture maker has to always ask the questions; What does the image say to the viewer? What is the story of the image?
There is some texture with the tree bark, and some high contrast lighting. That is provide with a strong focused light source such as the sun. Texture of tree trunks is more interesting and subtle when the light is diffused with high light cloud cover. Or at sunrise and sunset.
From the title of image, the maker seems to wish to direct a viewer’s eye to tree knot, however the eye is naturally drawn to the brightest portion of the image outside the know, Not the shadow.
