The maker has chosen an interesting pattern to present to the viewer. Exposure is good, so structure looks realistic, as opposed to abstract.
When viewed from foreground, because it begins the repeating pattern, it should be level. It is not. Use either L Room or CS to level.
While there is a black point in the image there does not appear to be a white point. In a B & W image there should be both. As a result there is limited contrast and it results in a gray image. Check your histogram, establish black and white points.
