1852: May to June, Marx and Engels write a pamphlet, "The Great Men of the Exile", against leaders of petty-bourgeois emigres, exposing their self-seeking drive for popularity and adventurous plans of an immediate revolution. Oct. to Dec., in connection with the trial of prominent Communist League members in Cologne, Marx and Engels publish statements and articles in a number of newspapers, exposing the unseemly conduct of Prussian police. Marx' pamphlet, "Revolution concerning the Communist Trial in Cologne", is published in Basle, January 1853. Nov. 17, on Marx' proposal, London Circle of Communist League dissolves itself, because the further existence is untimely in view of the growing reaction of European continent and the arrest of many of the League's active members. 1853: May-June, Engels studies Persian and the history of Oriental countries. Oct. 4, 1853 to March 30, 1856, The Crimean War. Marx and Engels follow the course of military operations, analyze them and publish articles on the position of the belligerent countries, the prospects of the war and the possibility of revolution in Europe. 1855: June-Sept., Engels writes a series of articles, "Armies in Europe", for "Putman's Monthly", New York. 1856: May, Engels and his wife "Mary Burns" visit Ireland. 1857: The world is gripped by an economic crisis. In their letters, Marx and Engels exchange information and opinions on the crisis in Europe and USA. They see it as a prologue to a new revolutionary upsurge. July 1857-Nov. 1860, Engels writes articles for "The New American Cyclopedia" on military history and theory. 1858: Engels studies natural sciences. 1859: Feb-March 9, Engels works on the pamphlet "Po and Rhine", exposing Bonapartism and advocating democratic revolutionary ways of unifying both Germany and Italy. May-August, Marx and Engels contribute to "Das Volk" (People), a newspaper of German Workers' Educational Society in London. Their article deal with major questions of revolutionary theory and tactics. June 11, "A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy", part one, by Marx is published in Berlin. August 3-15, Engels writes a review of Marx' "A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy" and publishes it in "Das Volk".
