1890 to 1894: Engels writes letters to Conrad Schmidt (August 5 and Oct. 27, 1890), Joseph Bloch (Sept. 21-22, 1890), Franz Mehring (July 14, 1893), W. Borgius (Jan. 25, 1894) and others, examining and elaborating on the principal tenets of Marxist science of society. May 4, Engels takes part in the first May Day demonstration and meeting in London. He considers the mass demonstration and meeting a big victory for English working-class movement. End of May to June 1891, Engels works (with intervals) on the 4th edition of his "Origin of Family, Private Property and State"; he studies the latest literature, in particular the books of M. M. Kovalevsky, Russian sociologist. The 4th edition comes off the press in November 1891. Sept. 30, Anti-Socialist Law is abrogated in Germany. Nov. 4, Helene Demuth, a great friend of Marx and Engels deceased. Nov. 28, Engels is seventy. He receives many greetings from associates, socialist and workers' parties and other organizations in different countries. Bebel, Liebknecht and Singer come to London to pay their respects to Engels on his seventieth birthday, on behalf of Social-Democratic Party of Germany. 1891: January, Engels publishes Marx' "Critique of Gotha Program" in the journal "Die Neue Zeit". March, Engels prepares for printing the 3rd German edition of Marx' "Civil War in France"; it appears on 20th anniversary of Paris Commune; he writes an introduction to it. May 3, Engels participates in the mass May Day demonstration and meeting in London. June, Engels sends Executive Committee of Social-Democratic Party of Germany his remarks on the draft program prepared for Erfurt Congress. He criticizes its political demands and its concessions to opportunism. July 4, Party's draft program, with some of Engels' remarks being taken into account, is printed in "Vorwarts" and in other party newspapers for discussion. In letters to Bebel and other leaders of Social-Democratic Party of Germany, Engels criticizes the editors of "Vorwarts" , Party's central organ, for opportunist mistakes. Sept. 8-23, Engels makes a trip to Ireland and Scotland. Mid-Oct. to early Nov., Engels follows the work of Erfurt Congress of Social-Democratic Party of Germany, held from October 14 to 21. He is pleased that it adopts a Marxist program. 1892: April 20, Engels writes a special introduction to the authorized English edition of his "Socialism: Utopian and Scientific"; the book appears in London, 1892. Engels' introduction (in his own translation) is also published in "Die Neue Zeit" in the beginning of June, under the heading "On Historical Materialism".
