Lucui Munoz
Painter
Spain

Born in Madrid, 1929

He had studied in Fine Arts School in Madrid.

At an early age, he abandoned basic-representativism and turned towards abstraction along the path of certain type of non-formalism, in which textures and materials are of considerable importance, but where color treated with intelligent delicacy, refuses to allow itself to be subjugated by the basic material.

In any case, Lucio has always betrayed a keen interest in topography of his paintings, as if the light and shade, which his relief give rise to were for him a language, which it is task to interpret. This explains, why in his later works he has not remained content with the texture that could be extracted from the aggregation of painting on the canvas. Instead, he has sought that he could arrive at through cutting away at the material element itself.

At this stage he resorted to wood; he scratches and hacks at it with aims that are nevertheless expressly concerned with a two-dimensional result and thus still belong to the realm of true painting as such. For it is not volume so much as the play of shadows created by volume that matters in his work, this being conjugated with an extremely expressive play of colors.

Where this technique is concerned, his most important masterpiece is probably the vast mural above the high altar in the Basilica at Aranzazu.
