Mahshid Modares
Painter
USA

Born in Iran
Mahshid Modares received her B.F.A. in painting from Azad University, Tehran in 1995 and her M.A. in art history from San Jose State University, California, in 2006.

She is concentrating her studies on the history of visual arts in Iran during the 18th-early 20th centuries. Her M.A. thesis titled Qajar Painting in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century and Realism was nominated for The Outstanding Thesis Award in 2006. She, also, received two scholarships and one fellowship for her papers. Mahshid Modares has been publishing her articles, including: The Impact of Photography on Qajar Painting, Cheshmak Photography Magazine, Iran (2013); Art Patronage of the Nineteenth Century Iran, Tavoos Magazine, Iran (2012); Realism in Nineteenth Century Iranian Figure Painting, The International Journal of The Arts in Society, U.S.A. (2009); Religious Art in Iran During the Qajar Period: Breaking the Boundaries, Artefact Journal, Canada (2009); Lithography in Iran During the Nineteenth Century: Art for People, Iran Chamber Society, U.S.A. (2008); Cultural Improvements in Iran During the Qajar Period and the West, Iran Chamber Society, U.S.A. (2007); European Artists in Iran During the Qajar Period, Golestan Honar Quarterly, Iran (2007); and, The School of Obscure World: Hussein Ali Zabehi’s Paintings, Architecture and Urbanism Magazine, Iran (2004).

Simultaneously, she has been actively working as a mixed media artist. From 1992 until present, she has participated in several group exhibitions in Iran and the U.S., and now in Canada. In her artworks, Mahshid Modares is looking for her roots as an Iranian individual. Her hidden tendency to abstractionism is related to geometric forms and colors of tiles, textiles, and Persian art in general. The abstract forms and distinctive compositions in Persian art have guided her to look for harmony, rhythm, and spiritual gradations in her paintings. She creates a harmonized dialogue between her art and its environment and encourages the viewer to appreciate the art and culture of Iran.

To have a better understanding of art in relation to the public, Mahshid Modares has worked with galleries and art organizations such as Persbook Art, Iran; Montalvo Arts Center, U.S.; Works Art and Performance Center, U.S.; and Tekaan Organization, U.S. as a board member and representative. These experiences have empowered her artistic viewpoint and her understanding of the social role of art while promoting talented artists. What specifically interests Mahshid about working with art organizations is the opportunity of bringing awareness about the art of other cultures to the community and inviting people to consider the essentiality of art in life.
