I am inspired by the beauty around me and all the experience of living. I paint in response to what I see and feel about a subject by letting the paintbrush lead me. Within the colourful and vibrant expressions I also attempt to establish a certain harmony within the body of the painting. I respond to my inner spirit and hope that this too is depicted in the image. I also hope that my art brings a joy to the viewer similar to which I created it with.
Jane Appleby is an intuitive painter/photographer, who paints with the vigour of her love of life. She instructs art classes and has designed and painted community murals.
Jane was born in the Czech Republic and immigrated to Vancouver in 1969 with her parents and brother, Frank Pochyly, who also is an artist.
Her father was an architect and encouraged Jane to draw from a young age. Her father’s sudden passing in 2006 has further driven Jane to paint and honour her father by pursuing similar passions to be creative. Her family continues to encourage her artistic expression. She lives in Burnaby with her husband, their five children and a variety of pets.
Many artists have personally inspired Jane including Canadian Artists Gordon Smith, Arnold Shives, Takaho Tanabe, and Roy Henry Vickers. Works of Van Gogh, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Rothko, Pollack and Diebencorn have influenced Jane, as have Canadian works by Tom Thompson, Emily Carr, BC Binning, the Group of Seven and Painters 11.
However much of Jane’s inspiration comes from nature and spending time outdoors and in self reflection.
Jane makes a point to go to the mountains, oceans, and forests where she feels open to inspiration. Her latest work includes completed paintings on location and abstract expressions of her experiences.
Jane’s work is shown in Galleries in Canada and US. Her works were exhibited at Caroun Art Gallery in 2010. Jane is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Canadian Association of Photographic Arts. “In White”, an abstract expression won an Award of Excellence at the Federation Abstract Show in February 2012. Her Photographs “Winter’s Peace” and “Opposites Attract” received an 2010 Honour Award in the Canadian Association of Photographic Arts and was published in their 2010 Spring Magazine.
She's taken part in 3rd Caroun Photo Club Annual Photography Exhibition at Caroun Art Gallery, North Vancouver, in January 2010.
